Rhode Island Historical Society Celebrate History Makers 2008
Dr. Robert Ballard, the discoverer of the RMS TITANIC, to speak at Rhode Island Historical Society’s 2008 History Makers Event. In addition to Dr. Ballard, the event will also honor Rhode Island Senior Federal Judge Bruce Selya and NBC Investigative Reporter Mr. Jim Taricani.
Providence, Rhode Island, May 1, 2008: On Saturday, June 7th, 2008 the Rhode Island Historical Society will hold its biennial event, History Makers, at the Culinary Arts Museum at Johnson & Wales University. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Robert Ballard, best known for his discovery of the RMS TITANIC and the German battleship BISMARCK. Dr. Ballard is the Director of the Institute for Archaeological Oceanography, at the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography, and President of the Institute of Exploration in Mystic, CT.
Also receiving awards at this year’s event are Mr. Jim Taricani, Investigative News Reporter, and Justice Bruce M. Selya, Senior United States Circuit Judge.
Mr. Jim Taricani, Investivative News Reporter. Jim Taricani, an award-winning investigative reporter for NBC10 in Providence, has been a model of the courageous and hard-hitting reporter. His coverage of the mafia in New England, and his pursuit of the truth behind the operations of the Cianci administration, for which he served six months of house arrest in defending the confidentiality of his sources, stand as admirable examples of adherence to principled professional and civic behavior. Rhode Island should always remember his great courage on behalf of the public good.
Judge Bruce Selya, Senior United States Circuit Judge, United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. As a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals, Bruce Selya occupies the highest judicial office ever held by a Rhode Islander. Judge Selya has also served the Rhode Island community in many admirable ways and was the founding chairman of the Lifespan heath-care system.
‘The Historical Society is proud to recognize these three exemplary Rhode Islanders”, says Board President Roger Begin. “Not only have they excelled in their chosen careers but they represent Rhode Island on a national level. They discover, educate and advocate much like the Historical Society itself”.
Bernard Fishman, RIHS’s Executive Director, states that “In highlighting the contributions of Dr. Ballard, Mr. Taricani and Justice Selya, History Makers 2008 will also underscore the important work of the Historical Society. Our educational programs in local schools, our community lectures, and our outstanding collections and events enhance the lives of all Rhode Islanders. Support for this event will help us continue these vital programs”.
History Makers 2008 will take place on June 7th, beginning with cocktails at 6pm. Dr. Ballard’s keynote address will commence punctually at 7pm and be immediately followed by the Awards Ceremony. Guests may then enjoy the museum, dinner stations, dessert and cocktails. Seating for Dr. Ballard’s presentation is limited.
