Strategic planning is the process by which an organization looks within itself and out at the wider environment in order to set its long-term goals and identify the best means of reaching them. The planning process frequently entails refocusing the core organizational mission in light of current conditions, and is often strengthened by having an outside consultant to serve as an objective facilitator. Soon after Executive Director Bernard Fishman took over in the spring of 2002, he and the Society's board concluded that given the financial, administrative, and environmental challenges facing the organization, a comprehensive strategic plan was urgently needed to put it on the path to renewal. After a national search, the San Francisco-based firm of Museum Management Consultants was hired to facilitate in the planning process in concert with the board-staff committee charged with developing the plan. In late January 2004, the Society's full board ratified the completed plan document, a PDF-format copy of which can be opened and printed by clicking here. |
