Day 7 Race and Slavery in New England Memory.
In the morning, teachers will hear two lectures. Dr. Margot Minardi, will lecture on commemorative practices associated with northern slavery, the topic of her forthcoming book. Next, Dr. Joanne Pope Melish will lead a pedagogical exercise on commemoration and reparations, using images of a Barrington, Rhode Island, “Monument to the Slaves” and associated commemorative and reparations-related materials. In the afternoon, teachers will walk over to the Rockefeller Library at Brown University, where Dr. James T. Campbell, author of the Pulitzer-prize-nominated Middle Passages and chair of the Brown University Committee on Slavery and Justice, will talk about the work and findings of the committee and the electronic archive it has amassed on all aspects of the connections between Rhode Island and the Atlantic slave system. For the rest of the afternoon, teachers will be able to explore the Slavery and Justice website in the Rockefeller Library computer lab.
Days 8-9.
Teachers will spend the next two days working in the RI Historical Society Library and the computer lab at the Rockefeller Library, creating and refining their institutional units and lesson plans based on the lectures, readings, and primary materials they have located in the course of the institute. The curriculum specialist, lead teacher, and co-directors of the institute will be available for consultation and advice.
