In Memoriam: Peter M. Griswold

Peter G

We are sad to announce the passing of another member of the RIHS family this week. Peter M. Griswold, M.A., M.L.S., of Cranston, died on January 18, 2017. He worked for 17 years as one of our Technical Services Librarians. Peter was a brilliant cataloger and was responsible for the electronic cataloging of more than 8,000 collection items for the RIHS. His work built the foundation for the smooth transition to the launch of our online catalog, NETOP.

Peter was an extremely kind and patient co-worker, friend, and human being. He served as a prison ministry volunteer for the Rhode Island Department of Corrections in Cranston, and as a tutor for adult learners with Literacy Volunteers of America. At the Wickford Seventh Day Adventist Church, he served as an Elder, Sabbath School Superintendent and teacher, visitation minister, and Head of Prison Ministries. In 2003, he participated in a mission trip to the Dominican Republic.

Peter’s years of detailed cataloging of the RIHS collections created an intellectual legacy that will be built upon for decades to come. He is greatly missed. – Phoebe Bean, Librarian
