Historical note:
On October 9, 1800, the Rhode Island General Assembly granted the charter of the Providence Mutual Fire Insurance Company to one hundred citizens of Providence, R.I. The company dealt solely in fire insurance, principally upon residential buildings, shops, and stores. Save fora few in the early years of the company, policies were not granted to manufacturing interests due to the especially high risk. The company remains in business today, with offices in Warwick, R.I.

Scope and content:
This collection consists solely of insurance policy books dating from 1807 to 1857. The books contain the full text of each insurance policy, including detailed descriptions of the property insured. They are arranged by policy number, which essentially means chronologically.
The volumes were divided into two series by the company: "Fire Records" (1801-1821) and "Policy Records" (1821-1857). These two sets of volumes contain essentially the same kinds of information. The earliest "Fire Records" volume, covering 1801 to 1807, is retained by the company.
An unpublished card index to the early volumes may be seen in the manuscript Reading Room of the Rhode Island Historical Society. The index is arranged by town, and then alphabetically by policy holder. This index covers all six volumes of the "Fire Records" series (including the earliest volume still in possession of the company), and volumes 1 through 24 of the "Policy Records" series, for a total range of 1801 to October 4 1842. The remaining 38 volumes through 1857 are not indexed.
