Historical note:


            The Providence Association of Medical Assistants (PAMA) was formed in the fall of 1960 by Elena Pilloni as a local chapter of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). Following its establishment, two other chapters formed in Pawtucket and Kent County. These three local chapters, with Providence being the largest, led to the formation of the Rhode Island Association of Medical Assistants (RIAMA), the statewide chapter of AAMA.

            The object of PAMA, as well as all of its affiliates, was "to inspire its members to render honest, loyal, and efficient service to the profession and to the public which they serve." Another important objective of this organization was to offer "educational services for the self improvement of its members and to stimulate a feeling of fellowship and cooperation among its members." PAMA was open to anyone who had been employed on a technical or administrative capacity for at least six months under the supervision of a doctor of medicine who was a member of the Rhode Island Medical Society (a professional association of Rhode Island doctors in all medical specialities) and practicing in Providence County or employed for more than six months in a medical laboratory, clinic, or hospital under like supervision. Therefore, a majority of the members were women who worked as medical assistants, lab technicians, medical secretaries and registered nurses. The organization was run by an executive board which served for a year and included a president, president-elect, vice president, corresponding secretary, recording secretary, treasurer and two trustees.

            PAMA and RIAMA are no longer in existence and RI no longer has an organized state society or any local chapters affiliated with the AAMA.

Scope and content:


            This collection ranges in date from 1962-1982. It includes annual and monthly reports, correspondence, meeting minutes, membership lists, newspaper clippings, and notes from the time in which this organization was formed until 1982. Also included are records from the two local chapters, Kent County and Pawtucket, and RIAMA. The RIAMA records include correspondence, reports, minutes as well as information that was sent to them from their parent organization, AAMA.
