Historical note:

Local 285 of the Hotel and Restaurant Employees and Bartenders International Union was founded in Providence, R.I. in 1902 as a bartender's local. The Narragansett Hotel workers were one of its largest contracts until they jumped to Local 730 of the CIO-affliated Hotel, Restaurant & Culinary Employees in 1953. This Local 730 merged back into Local 285 in 1957. Local 307 apparently merged into Local 285 circa 1960, making Local 285 the only local in Rhode Island. Local 285 was placed under trusteeship in 1974 and merged into Local 217 in 1976. See also Mss 106 sg 1 (records of Local 307) and Mss 1096 sg 2 (records of Local 217).
