Historical note:

Otis Bullock (1806-1884), the son of Dr. Samuel and Betsey (Dorrance) Bullock, was born in Sterling, CT. He studied medicine with Drs. Usher Parsons of Providence and Jeremiah Williams of Warren, Rhode Island and received his MD from the Harvard Medical School in March 1832. For several years he was partnered with Dr. Williams of Warren (whom he succeeded); he had a large and successful practice.

He was president of the RI Medical Society in 1866 & 1867 and prior to that was the censor for the Society since 1840. He was a member of the Medical and Surgical Staff of the RI Hospital since its foundation. From 1838-1845 he was surgeon to the Militia of Rhode Island for Bristol County.

            He married three times:

1836: Martha M. Randall - died in 1837 (one child: Martha Otis).

1842: Elizabeth H. Saunders - died 1873 (two children: Herbert D. and George S.)

1875: Mary F. Collins.

Scope and content:

These are the papers of the family of Sarah A.H. (Babbitt) Bullock, who lived very roughly from about 1890 to 1970. Papers of the following family members are present:

Her great-grandfather Joseph Hawes (1772-1847), a Providence cotton merchant

Her great-grandmother Sarah (Hopkins) Hawes (1781-1860)

Her great-uncle Joseph Hawes Jr. (1804-1864), never married

Her grandmother Sarah (Hawes) Harris (1812-1890)

Her grandfather George J. Harris (1805-1870) of Providence

Her aunt Sarah G. Harris (1844-1865), who died young

Her aunt Alice Frances Harris (1843-1887), who never married

Her aunt Abby C. Harris (1837-1907), who also never married

Her mother Sophia (Harris) Babbitt (1854-1928), married Edward M. Babbitt

Sarah A.H. Babbitt married Edward J.C. Bullock (ca.1890-1970???) in Providence on July 28, 1927. He was a court clerk. They lived at 185 Benefit Street until 1963, when they disappear from the Providence directories. There are a few papers in this collection from his ancestors, as follows:

His great-grandparents George Saunders (1797-1827) and Emeline Saunders, of Warren R.I.

His grandmother Elizabeth (Saunders) Bullock (1821-1873)

His grandfather Otis Bullock (1806-1884), a Warren physician

His father George S. Bullock (b.1849), a foundry supply salesman

The Saunders papers consist primarily of the financial records of George Saunders, his widow Emmeline and their daughter Elizabeth H. Saunders (Bullock).

Provenance:

It appears likely that these papers remained in the hands of Edward and Sarah Bullock through at least 1963, until either they died or left Providence. Nino Scotti, an auctioneer who settled many large estates in Providence, acquired the papers and sold them to the R.I.H.S.L. in two batches in 1974 and 1975. He also sold the papers of Bristol merchant Jacob Babbitt to the R.I.H.S.L. in 1975. They are cataloged as a separate collection, but are probably related in some way to Sarah Bullock's father Edward S. Babbitt.

Processing note:

The papers are still badly disorganized, and will require some patience to use. Diaries have been already been pulled out for special attention. In 1998, the following papers were transferred to other collections: five tax lists dated 1780-1787 to the Warren Town Records Collection; three August 1778 muster rolls of Capt. Robert Carr's company of Miller's regiment, to the Revolutionary War Military Collection; and a memorandum book of the Woonsocket Company textile mill dated 1834-1870, to the Allen Print Works Records.

Metal fasteners were removed and the papers were flattened. Since the original order was non-existent documents were sorted chronologically (and alphabetically, if appropriate), placed in acid-free folders and housed in acid-free boxes. Some tears were mended with archival tape.

Otis Bullock's 1832 Medical Diploma was placed in oversized storage.
