Historical note:

Caroline Hazard (1856-1945) was the second of five children of industrialist Rowland Hazard II and Margaret A. (Rood) Hazard of Peace Dale, Rhode Island. She attended Miss Mary A. Shaw’s School in Providence, was tutored privately by Brown University professor Lewis Diman for ten years, and then received private lessons as she traveled through Europe. After the completion of her formal education, she returned to "Oakwoods", the family home in Peace Dale, where she conducted welfare programs, especially for the children of the employees of her father's Peace Dale Manufacturing Company. She also wrote poetry, biographies and works relating to her family history. She became known as an authority on the history of Rhode Island.

In 1899, at the age of forty-three, she became the fifth President of Wellesley College. She helped save Wellesley from serious fiscal problems through her fund-raising abilities, wide acquaintance with philanthropists throughout the northeast, and substantial donations from her own savings. During the eleven years of her presidency, enrollment doubled, four new academic departments were created, five academic buildings were constructed, and professor's salaries improved. Hazard retired from the presidency in 1910 for health reasons, and constructed the "Scallop Shell" house in Peace Dale as her new primary residence the same year. She remained involved in various nonprofit organizations, and continued writing poetry and travel memoirs. She never married or had any children. After 1936, she also had a secondary residence at the "Dial House" in Santa Barbara, California, where she died on March 19, 1945. She is buried in Peace Dale.

Scope and content:

Caroline Hazard's papers consist largely of her personal correspondence and financial records. Of particular interest are the numerous letters from her friend Katherine Lee Bates, author of "America the Beautiful." Transcendentalist author Elizabeth Palmer Peabody and Gen. John J. Pershing were also correspondents. One letter documents Hazard's early support of the Lockheed Airplane Company.

The Caroline Hazard Papers are divided into four series. Series 1 (correspondence) includes letters sent and received from 1876 to 1945. Series 2 (subject files) includes diaries, appointment books, notes for her Diman biography, and other papers. Series 3 (financial records) includes bank account books, charitable contributions, financial correspondence, tax records, and other financial records. Series 4 consists of notes regarding the processing of the papers.

In addition, five boxes of Caroline Hazard's personal papers can be found in the Wellesley College Archives. Eight boxes of her papers are at the University of Rhode Island. Three additional boxes of her papers can be found in the archives of the James P. Adams Library at Rhode Island College. One of her letters is at the Newport Historical Society.
