Historical note:

The Landholders' Bank was chartered in South Kingstown by act of the Rhode Island General Assembly in February of 1818, with capital stock of $50,000, divided in 1,000 shares. In January of 1862, the Assembly authorized a reduction in capital for the bank; the final entry in the transfer book occurs the following month.

Scope and content:

Weekly reports and other records from a South Kingstown, R.I., bank. This collection contains 13 volumes. Six volumes of weekly reports (1818-1839) list each deposit, and describe cash on hand: bank notes, gold, silver and "foreign paper" (further subdivided by bank of origin). They also contain a complete equity statement. Four slim volumes of offering books list bank notes issued, from 1853 to 1860. The transfers book accounts for all changes in ownership of bank stock from 1818 to 1862. The due book lists all notes due from 1818 to 1821, and the blotter is a running account of deposits and withdrawals, from 1856 to 1857.

Provenance:

The provenance of this collection is unknown; it seems to have arrived before 1970. It quite possibly arrived as part of the Potter Family Papers in 1968, as a gift from the University of Rhode Island. Alternately, it may have arrived as part of an earlier unrecorded gift from William Davis Miller, the original owner of the Potter Papers. Four other folders of Landholders' Bank records can be found in the Elisha R. Potter Sr. Papers (Mss 629, sg 2), and relative Amos Wells was later a bank official.
