Historical note:


            The United Spanish-American War Veterans, R.I. Department was a veteran's association founded in Providence in 1899 or 1900. The association was organized by individual camps throughout the state. Its existence was listed in the Providence City Directory as late as 1970. Each camp was named and numbered. The camps contained in the collection are as follows:

Scope and content:


            The collection contains records primarily for the R.I. Dept., dating from 1907 - 1934. Included are correspondence, muster rolls, death records, camp rosters, various administrative reports, and miscellaneous items such as bulletins and general orders. Other states are occasionally represented. A report dated 1924 gives detailed psychiatric evaluations of eleven mentally ill veterans institutionalized at Howard, R.I.
