Historical note:

Lyman B. Goff (1841-1927) was the son of Darius and Harriet (Lee) Goff, and spent his entire adult life in Pawtucket, R.I. He was the head of the Union Wadding Company of Pawtucket, and was involved with a wide variety of other textile firms. He was also active in the state's Republican Party, and was a major benefactor of the Pawtucket Congregational Church. In 1864, he married Almira Thornton (1842-1921), daughter of Jesse S. Thornton. They had two children: Lyman T. Goff (1868-1900) and Elizabeth L. Goff (1869-1948).

Elizabeth L. Goff (1869-1948) married Kenneth F. Wood (1873-1925). He was a chemist at the Sayles Bleacheries in Pawtucket. They had two daughters: Eleanor T. Wood (1906-1990), who married John C.B. Washburn; and Ruth G. Wood (1911-1939).

Scope and content:

This subgroup consists of papers relating to the family of Eleanor T. (Wood) Washburn. Of particular interest are travel diaries of Almira (Thornton) Goff and her daughter Elizabeth (Goff) Wood dated 1883 to 1934, and a log book kept aboard the yacht of Kenneth F. Wood. The collection also includes a few family letters, and other papers.

For the family papers of John C.B. Washburn, the husband of Eleanor T. (Wood) Washburn, see the master finding aid to the Washburn-Abbott-Fessenden-Wood Family Papers.

Provenance:

The bulk of the Washburn Papers were given to the Society in 1982 by Mrs. Eleanor (Wood) Washburn, but this accession contained no papers from her own Wood and Goff ancestors. In 1990 a major addendum was donated by Brock D. Bierman, who had received the material from Mrs. Washburn's estate. Much of this 1990 accession consisted of Wood and Goff papers.

Processing note:

Harold Kemble gave the original accession a preliminary processing circa 1983. Cindy Bendroth integrated the additional material with the rest of the collection in February of 1992. This was done in separate folders, so that the 1982 accession and 1990-1991 accessions could be easily distinguished. What had been arranged before was not disturbed. A rough finding aid was written at this time, and preliminary cataloging was done. In 2000, about one linear foot of material relating to the Woods family was transferred to the Woods family papers. The remainder was completely reprocessed, and reorganized into series based on family groups. Additional cataloging was done at this time. The 1992 finding aid has been placed in the collection file to show the previous arrangement.
