  RHODE ISLAND HISTORY

                                                         Information for Authors

Rhode Island History is published three times a year by the Rhode Island Historical Society.  We welcome any articles that present interpretations of an aspect of Rhode Island 's history, of individuals and groups primarily associated with Rhode Island , or of a phase of New England history in which Rhode Island or Rhode Islanders figure prominently.  Articles should show evidence of research in primary source materials.  Edited primary documents will not be accepted unless an interpretive framework is provided along with scholarly annotations.  Authors should consult back issues before submitting an article to make sure their subject has not already been covered.  Past issues will also give authors a good idea of style and format.

The Editor has final authority over selection or rejection of articles and determination of publication dates for articles accepted.  In case of doubt over selection of articles, the Editor will secure opinions from outside readers or the Publications Committee.

Articles should be submitted (1) on a CD or a 3.5-inch high-density diskette in an IBM-compatible format (such as Microsoft Word or WordPerfect) or via e-mail, (2) with a printout or a typed manuscript of the submission. The following guidelines should be observed:

     1.    Double-space all copy, including text, quotations, notes, and tables.  Set wide margins to provide editing space.

     2.    Place notes together following the last page of the article, not at the bottom of text pages. Triple-space between notes.

     3.    Number pages consecutively throughout.

Rhode Island History does not have a style sheet, but authors may follow forms recommended in the University of Chicago Press 's Chicago Manual of Style, 14th edition.  The Editor is the final arbiter of length, grammar, and usage; articles will be edited to conform to Rhode Island History's style regarding punctuation, capitalization, and the like.

Authors of submissions accepted for publication in Rhode Island History will be responsible for providing illustrations, at their own expense, to accompany their published articles.  Illustrations may be obtained from the Rhode Island Historical Society's Graphics Collection, other sources, or some combination of the two.  (Items obtained from the Society’s Graphics Collection for use in Rhode Island History will be provided without charge.)  Illustrations may be submitted as glossy prints or via CD or e-mail.  Further information about illustrations will be supplied to authors upon acceptance of their submitted articles.

It is the responsibility of the author to secure, when necessary, permission to quote any material included in a published work.

Articles should be submitted to Elizabeth C. Stevens, Editor, Rhode Island History, 110 Benevolent Street , Providence , Rhode Island 02906 .  Please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope for possible return of submitted material

Authors will receive five copies of the issue in which their articles are published.
