Revolutionary Types: How the Press Began the American War for Independence

Eighteenth-century newspapers and pamphlets were essential to the dissemination of information and were instrumental in fanning the flames of discord on both sides of the Revolutionary conflict. However, how did printers get their information? How were newspapers and pamphlets printed? What meaning did words and symbols hold to persuade and encourage rebellion or loyalty? Costumed living historians will answer these questions and much more during the interactive program, Revolutionary Types: How the Press Began the American War for Independence.

This event focuses on the narrative of the incredible role that printing and propaganda played in the pivotal events leading up to the American Revolution. It also includes material culture items to engage visitors and deepen one’s understanding of the root cause behind this turning point in American history.

Revolutionary Types takes place at the John Brown House Museum on Saturday, August 9, 2025, from 10am-4pm. General admission costs $10 per person and is free for RIHS members, other admission discounts are available. Tickets are available here.
