Join the Rhode Island Historical Society on Thursday, September 26 for the Barker Playhouse’s production of They Promised Her the Moon.
In 1960, the famed “Mercury Seven” trained at NASA to become the first American astronaut. But they weren’t alone. Thirteen women also underwent the same rigorous psychological and physical testing. The first woman to be tested, Jerrie Cobb, outperformed her male counterparts. However, while Alan Shepard and John Glenn went on to become household names, Ms. Cobb never got that chance.
In vividly theatrical terms, They Promised Her the Moon tells the true story of this exceptional and unjustly overlooked woman—skilled aviator, world-record-holding pilot, successful business executive—and the powerful forces that kept her from reaching orbit.
Prior to the 7:30 p.m. performance, guests will be treated to themed refreshments, including a moonshine-based cocktail from White Dog Distilling and moon-inspired cheese trays, followed by moon cakes during intermission. Doors open at 6:45 p.m.
Registration is required and limited. Tickets available here.
