We will explore topics such as language and identity\, suffrage\, immigration\, protest\, and the Black experience\, tracing how past events have affected our contemporary world\, and how we can harness that knowledge to shape our future. Students will meet at the Society’s Museum of Work & Culture in Woonsocket with the possibility of visits to our other sites. Students will have opportunities to work with primary resource materials (museum objects as well as archival materials)\, and meet museum and library staff. \nIn addition to learning about the history and contemporary state of the topics being covered\, students will grow their critical thinking skills and abilities to see connections to how past actions and events influence the contemporary world in ways both direct and indirect. They will then be able to apply those same skills as they consider ways that they can empower themselves to shape their future. This course aligns with Social Studies\, History\, and Civics. \nThis course is for Rhode Island middle and high school students age 12 and up\, and meets daily from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for one week.  Register for this free course through All Course Network at RIDE URL:https://www.rihs.org/event/then-now-the-relevance-of-history-in-todays-world-summer-program-for-teens/ LOCATION:Museum of Work & Culture\, 42 S Main St\, Woonsocket\, RI\, 02895\, United States ORGANIZER;CN="Geralyn Ducady":MAILTO:gducady@rihs.org END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20210713T190000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20210713T200000 DTSTAMP:20240328T150702 CREATED:20210612T191253Z LAST-MODIFIED:20210612T191727Z UID:22337-1626202800-1626206400@www.rihs.org SUMMARY:Slatersville Preview Screening: The War DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Work & Culture will offer a virtual documentary screening on Tuesday\, July 13\, 2021 at 7:00 pm when critically acclaimed filmmaker Christian de Rezendes will present a segment of Slatersville: America’s First Mill Village: “The War.” This virtual event will also feature an introduction by and concluding Q&A with the filmmaker. \nIn this event\, documentarian de Rezendes will discuss his upcoming historical documentary series\, Slatersville: America’s First Mill Village\, which will premiere on Rhode Island PBS in 2022. “The War” covers World War II on the homefront in Slatersville and the achievements of the Kendall Company.
