His mother is a noted Fancy Shawl dancer\, while his father practiced the Eastern War style. Early in his life\, Sherenté followed in his father’s footsteps by competing in Eastern War dance competitions. After he came out as Two Spirit\, the modern pan-Indian term that is used to describe non-binary gender and sexuality in Native American communities\, Sherenté faced discrimination while trying to compete in Fancy Shawl competitions. Hear how they overcame this experience to go on and win first place\, as well as become a youth leader and activist in both the LGBTQ+ and Narragansett communities. The program will also feature Sherenté performing a Fancy Shawl dance. \nTo register: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcvduyopzMuE9CSrzuVVokzXo5xh8Noww0S \n  \n  URL:https://www.rihs.org/event/complete-the-circle-with-sherente-mishitashin-harris/ LOCATION:RI CATEGORIES:Event,Virtual ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://www.rihs.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/SEEDS_Day_1-034-1-3-1.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20201210T080000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20201218T170000 DTSTAMP:20240329T044427 CREATED:20201210T205455Z LAST-MODIFIED:20201210T205910Z UID:21747-1607587200-1608310800@www.rihs.org SUMMARY:Making 2020 History Online Auction!
