The Rhode Island Historical Society is seeking a dynamic Public Engagement Manager to develop and execute organization-wide public programs, create rewarding benefit opportunities for our members, and develop and grow relationships with new and existing community
partners. This position is an opportunity to create engaging and thoughtful programming for Rhode Island’s only state-wide history organization and ensure that the stories of all Rhode Islanders are reflected and shared in those programs.

The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to organize events and connect with local communities. They should be an excellent communicator, highly organized, and have exceptional follow-through and interpersonal skills. They should also share a personal
commitment to the RIHS’s mission of honoring, interpreting, and sharing Rhode Island’s past to enrich the present and inspire the future.

This position reports to the Director of Advancement & Public Engagement and will work closely with the Communications Coordinator, Membership Assistant, A/PE Assistant, and Walking Tours Coordinator, as well as the teams at the John Brown House Museum, Museum of Work & Culture, and Robinson Research Center.


Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

● Work with the Director of Advancement & Public Engagement to create a calendar of robust and engaging programs and initiatives that build on the RIHS strategic plan and vision;
● Develop rewarding events and opportunities as exclusive benefits to RIHS members in an effort to support goals for member retention and growth;
● Manage event logistics and planning, including identifying and coordinating the involvement of appropriate speakers, performers, and presenting partners, space planning and setup, ticketing and registration, and volunteer coordination;
● Collaborate with the Communications Coordinator to advertise these programs, including the creation of press releases, posters and promotional images, social media strategies, and any necessary web content;
● Ensure programs fit within budgetary guidelines, and strategize with the Director of Advancement & Public Engagement to ensure revenue goals are met; and
● Gather & analyze data on program outcomes to strategize new and improved programs.


We are seeking a team member who excels in project management, is detail-oriented, and is a skilled communicator. The ideal candidate should have:

● A track record of developing and organizing successful events;
● Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously;
● The ability to recognize opportunities and make connections between initiatives;
● The strong interpersonal skills needed for building authentic partnerships; and
● A creative mindset and enthusiasm for collaboration.

Candidates should also be proficient in the Google Suite of products. Experience using Canva is a plus.
