RIHD Research Intern
The Rhode Island History Day (RIHD) Team is looking for two hard-working and enthusiastic
individuals to join our team during the Summer of 2021 as our RIHD research intern(s). Working
under the direction of the Assistant Coordinator, the intern(s) will assist the RIHD team by
creating resource kits and themed materials for RI middle and high school students to use in the
lead up to and during the 2022 Rhode Island History Day Contest. The intern(s) will be expected
to be able to travel to RIHS’ offices and library in Providence, and there may be opportunities to
travel to partner sites around RI. Interns can anticipate the project to take 10 hrs per week.
Those hours can be arranged, but will mainly fall during the RIHS’ regular work week with some
opportunities for work from home or on the weekends as permitted.
● Research local RI topics related to the 2022 NHD annual theme.
● Collect and compile primary and secondary sources related to each topic for both
digital/easily accessible sources and finding aids for not readily accessible sources.
● Write learning questions to go with each topic. Write a description of each primary
● Research RI topics and collect sources to assist RIHD students in applying for
sponsored special awards.
● Write a theme narrative that links the annual theme to local RI topics
● Create resources on how to do research in the RIHS Library and in town halls for RIHD
students to better access non-digital sources and town records.
About Rhode Island History Day:
Rhode Island has been a state affiliate of National History Day for over 30 years and the Rhode
Island History Day (RIHD) program is proudly managed by the Rhode Island Historical Society.
Rhode Island History Day allows students in grades 6-12 to deeply explore an aspect of history,
gain research and critical-thinking skills, and creatively deliver their research findings. Annually,
the RIHD program engages 1,000 students across the state.
