Erie Specialty Company Erie, Penn., and New York, N.Y. Records, 1902-1928 Size: 4 ft. Catalog number: MSS 6 sg 11 Processed by: Harold E. Kemble, Jr. ©Rhode Island Historical Society Manuscripts Division |
Historical note:
The Erie Specialty Company was organized on 8 January 1902, in Erie, Pennsylvania. Originally the company manufactured "... hardware, kitchen, hotel, bar, and druggist sundries, metal advertisements and soda fountain specialties." The next decade saw a gradual move into more technical and heavier manufacture. In 1917, after takeover by a New York group which added a manufacturing plant in New York, the company moved into machine parts for aircraft and automobiles. It may have been in this period that Sayles gained a controlling interest in the company's stock shares. Paul C. Nicholson of Providence, Rhode Island, son-in-law of Frank A. Sayles, early became a large shareholder. After the death in 1920 of Frank A. Sayles, two of the executors of his estate, Charles O. Read and Kenneth F. Wood, were seated on the board of directors.
Scope and content:
Included are organizational and financial records of light and heavy manufacturing, principally of metal products, 1902 - 1928. The records of this company illustrate the impact of World War I on U.S. industry - much of their business was done with the Federal government and with industries contracting with the government.
Provenance:
Gift of the Sayles Finishing Plants on 25 December 1971.
