Scope and content:

The correspondence files from 1978 to 1982 contain copies of many letters to and from Gov. J. Joseph Garrahy. Other political notables in the correspondence files are Sen. John H. Chafee (June 6 1984), Sen. Claiborne Pell (June 7 1984).

Rhode Island AFL-CIO Scrapbooks:

These scrapbooks were begun by the Rhode Island Congress of Industrial Organizations in 1953 and were continued after the AFL-CIO merger in 1957, ending in 1962. The clippings were done by a news service. Many of the clippings are from the well-indexed Providence Journal and the Providence Evening Bulletin, but there are also many clippings from unindexed papers such as the Pawtuxet Valley Times, Woonsocket Sunday Star, Pawtucket Times, Westerly Sun, Newport Mercury, and Woonsocket Call. There are also occasional clippings from other New England papers relating to the RI AFL-CIO.

The agency apparently clipped any article containing the acronym "CIO" or "AFL-CIO." As virtually every union in the state was a member of the AFL-CIO after 1957, and used "AFL-CIO" as part of its official title, this means that a large proportion of Rhode Island union news is covered by the scrapbooks. The Pawtucket, Woonsocket, Newport and Westerly news is not easily accessible by any other means, making these books of great value for any sort of trade union research in the late 1950s.

Provenance:

These records were donated in 2000 by the R.I. AFL-CIO, largely through the efforts of labor historian Scott Molloy. An audio reel-to-reel tape from the gift was placed in the Graphics Division, and newsletters and other material were placed in the Printed Collection.
