Bristol Town Records Collection Bristol, R.I. Records, 1702-1880 Size: .25 ft. Catalog number: MSS 188 Processed by: Karen Eberhart, May 2007 ©Rhode Island Historical Society Manuscripts Division |
Historical note:
The Town of Bristol in Rhode Island was incorporated by Plymouth Colony on October 28, 1681 and the eastern boundary set by royal decree May 28, 1746.
Scope and content:
This collection contains miscellaneous items created by town officials, relating to official town business, or provide information about town inhabitants. Of particular note is the copy created in 1702 of the deed to Mount Hope and Poppasquash from the Plymouth Colony granted in 1681. The census copied in 1880 from a 1688/9 original and the lists of children born and dwelling houses constructed during 1804-1811 will also be of use to genealogists and historians.
The tax records for 1814 were created as part of the United States Federal Direct Tax of 1814. Rhode Island was divided into 3 districts. Bristol was part of the First District. Additional records for the Second Disctrict, which included Providence and the towns in the northern part of the state are located in the Providence Direct Tax, 1814 collection (MSS 214 SG 13).
Provenance:
The tax records providing the description and valuation of real estate in 1814 for owners with last names B-L were donated to the RIHS by George Gorton in 1900. He found them at a junk shop after many of them were already missing. The copy created in 1702 of the deed of Mount Hope and Poppasquash from Plymouth Colony, granted 14 Sep 1680 was donated by the Rhode Island State Library in 1916. The following three items were part of a gift from Rudolf F. Haffenreffer III in 1971: The Adjutants Duty on September 13th General Trainings at Bristol, R.I., 1825-1827; Order to assemble with a list of men, Sylvester Munro, Sergeant; Anthony V. Doorn, Captain, 1800; Claims against the estate of William Munro, 4 Aug 1788.
