Historical note:

Amos Chafee Barstow (1813-1894) was born 30 April 1813 to Nathaniel and Sophia Chafee Barstow in Providence, R.I. Barstow married Emeline Mumford Eames (1813-1900) on 28 May 1834 and together they had the following children: Sarah S. (Barstow) Thomas (1839-1901), Emeline E. (Barstow) Bradford (1840-1937), Mary L. (Barstow) Cooke (1842-1919), Martha M. (Barstow) Cutler (1844-1873), Anna J. (Barstow) Butler (1846-1923), Amos C. Barstow, Jr. (1848-1903), and George E. Barstow (b. 1849). Amos C. Barstow was a stove manufacturer and operated the Barstow Stove Company on Point Street in Providence, R.I. He died on 5 September 1894 in Providence, R.I.

Amos Chafee Barstow, Jr. (1848-1903) was born 2 November 1848 in Providence and was a stove manufacturer like his father. He married Grace Mason Palmer (1850-1933) on 27 June 1876 and they lived at 224 Angell Street in Providence. Amos and Grace had four children:

Amos C. Barstow III (1877-1879), Mary M. (Barstow) Guernsey (1879-1967), John Palmer Barstow (1880-1937), and Grace E. (Barstow) Murphy (1888-1975). He died on 12 May 1903 and is buried in the Swan Point Cemetery in Providence, R.I.

Grace E. (Barstow) Murphy moved to New York with her family and took in her mother, Grace M. Palmer Barstow when she was no longer able to live independently. Grace E. (Barstow) Murphy was the mother of Alison M. Conner, the donor of this collection.
