Historical note:
The East Providence Water Company was incorporated in May, 1895 by Marsden J. Perry, Darius F. Goff, Ellery H. Wilson, Benjamin Wilson and Benjamin A. Jackson. In October the company purchased the works and water rights of the East Providence Fire District and undertook thereafter to provide domestic water services in East Providence. As of 1900 the principle shareholders were Marsden Perry and Frank A. Sayles, who had received stock in payment for water rights owned by the Agawan Finishing Company on Ten Mile River. Charles E. Pierce was superintendent until c. 1920 and A.B. Lisle was treasurer. Although the works were located at Hunt's Mill in the village of Rumford, the company offices were in the Turk's Head Building in Providence. The company purchased land adjacent to the works and developed an amusement park to help offset the losses of running the water works. The property and business were transferred in September, 1922 to Sayles Finishing Plants, Inc., and were sold in 1927 to the City of East Providence.
Scope and content:
These records pertain to a domestic water service, 1878-1932; location and installation of mains; an amusement park. Of interest are materials found in the section titled "Rate Case Materials" which include: tables of rainfall runoff and water flow along Ten Mile River; construction of the Central Pond by the Central Cotton Mills Establishment; copies of the company charter and by-laws; and historical information about the company and its antecedent.
