Historical note:

The Goodridge Company was incorporated in the State of New York in 1886, and in that year first appears in the Newport City Directory. The factory, located at Thames and Church Streets, turned out a variety of woven and braided elastic fabrics including suspenders, arm band cord, corset laces, garters and waist bands. The owner, E. Read Goodridge, resided in Newport c. 1892-1896 also keeping a residence at Riverdale, New York. While Goodridge made sales calls in New England via company offices in Boston and New York, the operation of the factory was mainly left to the superintendents, of which we have the name of A. H. Engel c. 1892-1896. The city directory makes no further mention of the company after this period. There is no indication what connection, if any, existed between the E. Read Goodridge Manufacturing Company and Sayles.
