Arlington Hay and Grain Company Cranston, R.I. Business records, 1887-1889 Size: 5.5 ft. Catalog number: MSS 6 sg 5 Processed by: Harold E. Kemble, Jr., July 1977 ©Rhode Island Historical Society Manuscripts Division |
Historical note:
The Arlington Hay and Grain Company's office and warehouse were located in the village of Arlington, near Cranston, while the mailing address was in Providence. The company were "retail and wholesale dealers in coal, wood, hay, straw, grain, lime, and cement and makers of choice meal." The meal was ground in their own grist mill, apparently also in Cranston. Business was conducted under the supervision of the agent, Anthony Corcoran. Arlington "H. & G. Co." is not listed earlier than the 1886 city directory for Providence, not later than the 1891 edition. Because the records came with the records of the Sayles Finishing Plants a connection is presumed, but it is not apparent in the records what that connection may have been.
