Historical note:
Artist Gino E. Conti (1900-a.1982) was born in Italy, came to America at the age of two, was raised in a working-class Providence family, attended the Rhode Island School of Design on scholarship, and graduated in 1923. He then studied painting in France, and spent over two years in an Italian monastery. On returning to Providence, he had a long and successful career as artist and teacher, and was commissioned for many public projects. Much of his work was influenced by early religious murals; he was also an accomplished sculptor. He lived in a small house on Planet Street on Providence's east side, where he taught children's art classes. In addition to his art, he was renowned for an enormous jade plant that grew in the center of his living room, which only bloomed once every ten years; Conti removed part of the ceiling to accommodate it. He last appeared in the 1982 Providence City Directory.
