Historical note:


            The First Light Infantry Company was formed in 1818 as a state militia company based in Providence, R.I., and was affiliated with the Second Regiment of the Rhode Island militia. Many of its members served in the Civil War in the First Regiment, Rhode Island Volunteer Infantry, Companies C and D.

            The First Light Infantry Veteran Association was formed by vote of the Company in 1869. Its members were veterans of the Company dating back to 1818.

Scope and content:


            This guide describes records of the Veteran's Association only. The R.I.H.S. also has a large collection of the First Artillery Company's records (see separate guide). There is also a related collection of First Regiment and First Battery Rhode Island Detached Militia Veteran Association Records, including many of the same members from the Civil War period. The Grand Army of the Republic Records give state-wide view of Civil War veterans.

Provenance:


            The box of loose papers were donated in 1997 by Stuart Mowbray. The three volumes are of uncertain provenance, but are assumed to have arrived in 1972 with a large collection of First Light Infantry records donated by Nino Scotti. The 1972 accession numbers were written into the volumes in 1997.
