Historical note:
The English-Speaking Union is an international organization founded in Great Britain in 1918. It is dedicated to the promotion of English as a global language, and to "promote communication and understanding through the medium of the English language." The Providence branch is involved mainly in the sponsorship of contests and lectures promoting English and cultural interaction with England. The influence of the Providence branch is hinted at by some of the important local figures who addressed its meetings in the 1990s, including U.S. Sen. John H. Chafee, Mayor Vincent Cianci, and Roger Mandle, the president of R.I.S.D.
Processing note:
These files were arranged by the branch president, Priscilla Phillips. They are still in non-archival folders.
