Historical note:
Paul C. Nicholson was the owner of the Nicholson File Company, a major manufacturing concern in Providence, R.I. These papers all relate to his hobby, which was a major collection of New England ship logs and ship models. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence and receipts regarding ship models and the Ship Model Society, a New York-based club.
Nicholson's logbook collection was divided between the Rhode Island Historical Society and the Providence Public Library (which received all whaling logs) upon his death in 1956.
These papers were donated by the estate of Paul C. Nicholson in 1958, via Miss Hubbard, a secretary at the Nicholson File Company. They were originally placed in the library's Vertical File, and were transferred to the Manuscripts Division circa 1985.
