Historical note:
The Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butchers Workmen of North America, Local 328 organized February 1939 and were affiliated with the American Federation of Labor. The first elected president was James Casey and was succeeded by the first vice-president, Salvatore DiSano. Primarily the group organized chains of stores and packing companies in the area, including Almacs and First National.
By 1948, the union had changed their name to Meat Cutters and Food Store Workers, Local 328 of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters. At some point between 1978 and 1987, Local 328 became affiliated with the United Food and Commercial Workers International. Their offices are presently located on Silver Spring Street in Providence.
Scope and content:
The collection consists of six minute books dating 1939-1961, and a scrapbook dated 1949-1970. The minutes include information on strikes, news from the international, notes on speakers and films, news on social events, negotiations, and labor legislation.
Provenance:
The minute books were given by the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Local 328 in 1980. The scrapbook was donated by the same union in 1998. Sal DiSano's autobiography was donated by the Rhode Island Labor History Society in 2001.
