Historical note:

            Mary Sharpe Chafee (1897-1989) was the daughter of Zachariah and Mary D. (Sharpe) Chafee of Providence. She was married to, and divorced from, Thomas B. Card and Jerome Andrews. She received her bachelor's degree in 1924 from Pembroke college, and a master's degree in 1934 from Brown. She lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the 1940s, where she played violin in a chamber quartet. She resided in France in the early 1950s, and settled in Barrington, Rhode Island circa 1955, where she remained until her death in 1989. She had two children, Mary B. Card and Peter C. Card. She was also an aunt of U.S. Senator John H. Chafee (1922-1999).

Scope and content:

            This collection consists solely of Mary S. Andrews' check journals, which run almost continuously from 1924 to 1989. Some of the checking accounts were held jointly with her daughter Mary B. Card. One journal also includes her daughter's separate 1949-1950 account. Some of the volumes were annotated in 1989, apparently by Mary B. Card.

            A large collection of the papers of Zechariah Chafee III (1859-1943), the father of Mary Andrews, is also held by the Manuscripts Division.
