Quonset Point-Davisville Records Naval base, North Kingstown, R.I. Records, 1939-1947 Size: 3.5 linear feet Catalog number: MSS 117 Processed circa 1972, inventory circa 1993 ©Rhode Island Historical Society Manuscripts Division |
Scope and content:
This collection consists mostly of correspondence, lists, legal documents, specifications and government contracts for the creation of the Quonset Point Naval Base. The last four boxes are photos and plat maps of the properties taken, including photos of outhouses and interiors as well as fronts of houses, taken during the winter.
An undated bulletin issued to the first women workers in the plant calls these workers “the fore-runner towards the success of women replacing men in our effort to win this huge undertaking that our country is engaged in.” It offers four rules for behavior, including the suggestion that “it is necessary, for your own welfare, that you act, at all times, with decorum.”
Provenance:
These records were donated by Stuart G. Wallace in 1972. The undated bulletin to women workers was purchased from A & D Antiques in 2002.
