Historical note:
A brief biographical sketch of the life of James H. Remington is provided along with a more detailed calendar of the events in his life.
James H. Remington was born in Warwick, RI in 1838 the son of Benjamin F. Remington (1806-1879) and Sarah A. Tillinghast (1809-1896). He attended East Greenwich Academy before going to Brown University, where he graduated as valedictorian in 1862. In September of that year he was mustered as captain of Company H, 7th Regiment, RI Infantry. His active military career only lasted until December 13, 1862 when he was wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg in Virginia. A musket ball shattered his lower jaw and he was formally discharged by reason of disability in May 1863. A description of his wound appears on a Muster and Descriptive Roll of a Detachment of Co.E, 1st Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps for November 1865: "Cause of Disability. Compound fracture of jaw from gunshot wound. Bone badly shattered and imperfectly united. Wound subject to occasional reopening inside the mouth. Degree of disability - three fourths (3/4)."
Remington returned to Rhode Island where he was elected in April l863 to the RI House of Representatives as a representative from Warwick. He resigned his seat in June as he was eager to return to military service. He accepted a captain's commission in the newly formed Veterans Reserve Corps (initially called the Invalid Corps). He was immediately ordered to report for duty at Knight General Hospital in New Haven, CT where he assisted with the formation of companies for the Veterans Reserve Corps. After serving with several different units in Connecticut and Virginia, he settled in as captain with Company E, 1st Regiment of the Veterans Reserve Corps. The company's primary duty was in Elmira, NY to guard rebel prisoners at Camp Chemung from November 1864 to June 1865.
While stationed in Elmira, Remington studied law in his spare time. His efforts payed off with an appointment to serve as Judge Advocate of a General Court Martial in Albany, NY from May to December, 1865. He was then appointed in mid December as Judge Advocate to investigate charges against Col. Elisha G. Marshall, Fifth U.S. Infantry at a Court of Inquiry convened in Rochester.
Many of the officers and men of the Veteran Reserve Corps were called upon to assist with reconstruction efforts in the south after the war. In January 1866, Remington was assigned to serve as an officer in Virginia for the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands (BRF&AL). His job was to help the people move from a war time to a peace time economy and to assist and protect the newly freed African-American population, referred to as freedpeople. The BRF&AL helped establish schools, acted as intermediary in disputes between the races and distributed food, clothing and fire wood to destitute people. The Bureau also monitored the court systems to ensure that everyone was treated justly by the courts or at least to report abuses to officials in Washington, D.C. Remington was involved in all aspects of the work, served in the 8th and 9th districts of Virginia before being promoted, in March 1867, to Superintendent of the 1st District, Department of the Potomac based in Norfolk, VA. He continued to serve with the Bureau until approximately November, 1868.
James Remington married Ellen "Nellie" F. Howard of Brooklyn, NY on October 14, 1868. They met while he was stationed in New Haven, CT as the Howards apparently also had a residence there. After the marriage, James began his private practice as a lawyer in Portsmouth, VA. In 1872, the couple moved to Brooklyn and Remington practiced law in New York City for the remainder of his life. He was a member of the firm Ulman, Remington & Porter and later of the firm Ten Eyck & Remington. He focused his career on tax, patent and real estate law. He was one of the earliest members of the NY State Bar Association and president of the United Sates Law Association from 1881 until his death in 1899. Nellie and James had at least two children, Charlie born circa 1874 and a daughter whose name and dates are currently unknown. Nellie died sometime in 1898 and James died soon after on February 19, 1899.
The histories of Batteries A and B of the 1st Regiment, Rhode Island Light Artillery are well documented in published sources. Both batteries participated in many battles and skirmishes. Battery A was merged with Battery B on September 23, 1864.

Scope and content:
The Remington collection dates from l849 to l929 with the bulk of the material dating from 1854 -1869. The collection is organized into eight series as follows:
Series 1: JHR - Personal and family
Series 2: JHR - Correspondence
Series 3: 7th Regiment, Rhode Island Volunteers
Series 4: Veteran Reserve Corps [former designation as Invalid Corps]
subseries 1: 2nd Company, 1st Battalion, Invalid Corps
subseries 2: Company H, 13th Regiment, 2nd Battalion, Invalid Corps
[former designation 41st Company, 2nd Battalion]
subseries 3: Company E, 1st Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps
Series 5: General Court Martial and Court of Inquiry
Series 6: Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands
Series 7: Battery A, 1st Regiment, Rhode Island Light Artillery
Series 8: Battery B, 1st Regiment, Rhode Island Light Artillery
Series 1 contains information about Remington's early and civilian life and it includes his diaries for the years 1862, 1864, 1867 and 1869. For more information on his diaries see the Guide to Diaries inventory located in the RIHS manuscripts division. A large number of his East Greenwich Academy school papers survived and include compositions he wrote on a wide range of topics. His later life is represented by a small amount of material on his law practice in Virginia and his personal financial accounts. The law practice material includes correspondence from his brother-in-law Charles N. Howard in the folder on the case of Sarah Lord. The exact family connection between James Remington and the account book of Ferdinand Remington has not been ascertained. That account book also includes the accounts of a female seamstress.
Series 2 contains primarily personal correspondence between James Remington and his family and acquaintances. A few letters he received as part of his military duties are also included in that collection. An item listing of the letters can be found at the end of this inventory.
Series 3 contains a small amount of material pertaining to his service as captain of Company H, 7th Regiment, RI Volunteers. See his diary for 1862 for more detailed information about his service with Company H.
Series 4 is divided according to the unit with which he served. These documents are his retained copy of the units's official records and give a detailed view of soldiers, supplies, and the company's general activities. Company E spent November of 1864 to June 1865 at Camp Chemung, the rebel prison camp in Elmira, NY. The records provide very little information about the conditions of the prisoners. The orders and correspondence for the VRC are wide ranging and contain such items as general orders from Washington, Special orders for particular soldiers, letters from distressed family members wanting information about their sons, charges brought against individual soldiers, and general correspondence for the maintenance of the company.
Series 5 contains Remington's notes and records while serving as Judge Advocate for a General Court Martial convened in Rochester, NY. The documents provide details about the charges and testimony against each soldier. For half of the cases the verdict is also available here.
Series 6 contains primarily Remington's retained copy of official records for the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands sent to Washington, D.C. The records are not divided according to which district Remington was serving in at the time. See the timeline of his life provided below to determine his location within Virginia at a particular time. The monthly returns for Bureaus Stores, Quartermaster's Stores and Clothing, Camp and Garrison Equipage give details on the clothing and fuel supplies being distributed to destitute peoples. Abstract L of the returns for Bureau Stores is a list of the "freedpeople" who received clothing including their name and the county in which they resided. Of note are also the Inspection report for each subdivision in the 1st Subdistrict of Virginia. The inspection reports are a narrative of the conditions experienced by the black residents as perceived by James Remington. A small amount of material is included on a torchlight procession planned by the "freedpeople" in Norfolk which is diverted by Remington for fear of a riot. Remington also writes an opinion on the case of Trimm, Kemp, Williams, Harrison & Young vs. Commonwealth of Virginia in which 5 black men are accused of murder. He is also involved with ensuring that colored soldiers receive the bounties due them and investigates Charles Buttz for stealing bounties.
Series 7 and Series 8 contain records of Battery A and Battery B of the 1st Regiment, Rhode Island Light Artillery. The muster rolls and descriptive lists provide specific information about the men that served. Of note in the Battery B records is information about the Gettysburg Gun which is still on display in front of the Rhode Island State House in Providence. The transcriptions of the diary and letters of Albert Straight also shed light on the history of the Gettysburg Gun and of Battery B.
Provenance:
These materials were purchased in 1964 as a collection from Gerald Ray. However, there is no discernible connection between the records of Battery A and B of the First RI Light Artillery and James H. Remington. Remington was never a member of either unit and has no known connection to them except that both sets of records were donated together. Why Gerald Ray had both sets of records is also unknown.
