Foster Town Records Collection Foster, RI Town records, 1760-1900 Size: 5.5 linear feet Catalog number: MSS 198 Processed by: Harold Kemble, 1987 and Karen Eberhart, 2002 ©Rhode Island Historical Society Manuscripts Division |
Historical note:
The town of Foster was originally part of the city of Providence. The town of Scituate including what is now Foster was taken from Providence in 1730-31. In 1781, Foster was in turn taken from Scituate and incorporated. The town was named in honor of the Honorable Theodore Foster and is located on the western edge of the state, south of Glocester.
Scope and content:
The collection consists primarily of real estate deeds, records from the Probate Court, Highway tax bills and birth, death and marriage records. Included are also three petitions from 1844 to prohibit the sale of alcohol within Foster except for medicinal purposes. The voting records include several documents which list the names of voters who cast ballots for specific candidates during elections in 1837-1850.
Provenance:
The bulk of the records were donated in 1987. Two documents came in separately. The School District #15 Record Book was donated in 1980 and a bond regarding the performance of auctioneer Laton Hill dated July, 1889 was donated in 1985.
Processing note:
Preliminary processing was performed by Harold E. Kemble in 1987 and completed by Karen Eberhart in 2002 with support from an Ott Grant from the Rhode Island Committee for the Humanities.
