Scope and content:
This collection consists largely of letters written by John F. Austin of Scituate, R.I. (1839-1886), who served as a corporal in Company K of the Seventh Regiment, Rhode Island Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. He enlisted into service on August 8, 1862 and mustered out on Jun 9, 1865. Other family papers are included in the collection.
Provenance:
These papers were the gift of Mrs. Ruth Erwin in 1968. According to Andrew Boisvert, a relative, Erwin was the grand-niece of John F. Austin.
