Historical note:

Henry Richmond Chace (1838-1916) was born in Fall River, MA, the son of Phillip H. Chace and Phoebe W. Chace, and came to Providence in his 16th year. He first obtained employment as a bookkeeper for Potter & Denison, furniture dealers, and later for Greene & Cranston, brokers. Shortly thereafter, he entered the employment of the Fourth National Bank, and later became cashier. In 1890 he formed a partnership with a Mr. Butts, establishing Chace & Butts, a banking and brokerage firm. Upon retiring from the firm in 1902, Chace became interested in the study of Rhode Island history, and was considered among the best authorities on maps and charts showing the location of the early dwellers of Providence. His two most notable contributions which demonstrate his skill as an amateur cartographer, as well as an historical researcher, are Owners and Occupants of the Lots, Houses and Shops in the Town of Providence, Rhode Island, 1798 and Maps of Providence, R.I.: 1650, 1765, 1770, both published by the Rhode Island Historical Society in 1914. Chace was a frequent contributor to the Providence Sunday Journal on the history of early Providence, and also presented several papers at the Rhode Island Historical Society. His papers and correspondence also suggest that locally, he was considered an expert in the field of Rhode Island genealogical research.

Chace was a member of the New York Stock Exchange for a number of years, and at one time, Treasurer of the Rhode Island School of Design. In his day, he was one of only five members of the University Club who were not college-educated. In addition, Chace was a member of the Rhode Island Historical Society, the Audubon Society, and was the founder of the Union for Christian Work.

At the time of his death in 1916 in Providence, Henry R. Chace was survived by his wife, Maude Dailey Chace, two daughters, Louise P. Chace and Maud Chace, one son, Henry R. Chace, Jr., and a brother, Captain Frank A. Chace -- all of Providence, RI.

Scope and content:

This collection is arranged into seven series and contains manuscripts for Chace's papers and book projects relating to early Providence and Rhode Island history, miscellaneous (non-RI subject) manuscripts, research notes, genealogical notes, personal notes, letters to and from Chace, newspaper clippings, as well as several large groups of index cards, which appear to be additional notes and indices for Chace's manuscripts. The collection also included a large collection of maps of various parts of Providence, drawn by Chace, which have been transferred to the Graphics Division. Most of the research for the manuscripts and maps in the collection seems to have been conducted after Chace's retirement in 1902.

Of particular interest to the researcher, may be Chace's manuscripts dealing with early Providence, in which he details the owners, occupants, and descriptions of Providence buildings and properties, through summaries and maps gathered from various primary sources, for the years 1759, 1770, 1779, and 1798. Chace's sources included, but were not limited to The Rate Streak for a Fire Engine, 1759, The Kingsley Carpenter List of Buildings, 1771, The Assessors Tax List, 1779, The United State Tax List, 1798, and The Early Records of the Town of Providence, 1892-1915.

It should also be noted that while the manuscripts, Owners and Occupants of the Lots, Houses and Shops in the Town of Providence, Rhode Island, 1798 and Maps of Providence, R.I.: 1650, 1765, 1770, were published by the RIHS in 1914, and thus have been available to the researcher for some time, the manuscripts dealing with Providence in 1759, 1770, and 1779 have never been published and have been made available only recently. These manuscripts may prove to be significant to those conducting research relevant to those dates.

Provenance:

These papers arrived in three gifts from the Chace family. In 1912, Henry R. Chace donated "a descriptive card catalog of houses in Providence, as taken by the assessors, copied by Claire Bliven and Henry R. Chace." In 1921, his widow Maude Dailey Chace donated the bulk of the collection, described as "a vast collection of manuscript notes compiled by Henry R. Chace while compiling his volumes of early plats of Providence." In 1936, a Miss Chace donated an unspecified additional quantity of "manuscript notes of Henry R. Chace".

Chace and his descendants donated other material as well, including papers relating to the 1886 Burnside monument; the Union Bank records (see separate finding aid); and papers of the Dailey family. In 1909, Maude (Dailey) Chace and her sister, Miss Charlotte K. Dailey, donated a collection called the Power-Whitman Papers, relating mostly to poet Sarah Helen Whitman. Henry R. Chace's mother-in-law, Mrs. Charlotte Dailey, had been a close friend of Whitman and served as her literary executor; some notes relating to Whitman can be found here in the Henry R. Chace Papers as well.

Processing note:

At the time of processing, the majority of Chace's manuscript notes were found in a condition of disarray. Much of the material was undated, and since many of Chace's historical manuscripts deal with similar subject matters of various dates, it is difficult to ascertain which notes belong with each manuscript. An attempt was made to retain the original order of Chace's work, however many of the loose papers required organization and/or serialization. In addition, the collection contains a large series of batches of index cards which seem to have served as notes for Chace's works. While the function of many of these card batches is clear -- and were labeled accordingly, a group of miscellaneous cards was necessary. Further, while most of the index cards deal with subject matter relating to early Providence and Rhode Island history (Series 1), the difference in their size and format made it necessary for them to be arranged into a separate series (Series 6). Any purely visual materials, such as drawings and maps, were transferred to the Graphics Division. For a specific list of transfer items, please consult the transfer list on the final page.

Series 5: Lot Notes

Note: A large number of these folder headings correspond to envelopes which contained notes dealing with property lots, and were labeled with owner family name or place-name by Chace himself. At this time, it is unclear as to which manuscript (if any) these notes correspond directly. To simplify matters, the term "lots" has been used to designate the terms "lots", "plats", and "plots", which were, at times, used interchangeably by Chace. Some family deed notes were placed with the lot notes by Chace, and have been left in their original arrangement, included in several folders in this series. The files in this series have been arranged (for the most part) alphabetically by the family name or place-name, in order to facilitate access. Miscellaneous lot folders are filed at the end of this series.
