Historical note:


            Robert Hazard (1689-1762) was the son of Thomas Hazard II (1660-1746) of South Kingstown. Robert inherited a large portion of Thomas' extensive land holdings in South Kingstown. He married Sarah Borden (b.1694); they had five children who reached adulthood, including Thomas "College Tom" Hazard (1720-1798).

Scope and content:


            This collection consists of Robert Hazard's will, two receipts, a memorandum re his father's death, a deed for a small house lot in Newport, six deeds from his family for land totaling 1080 acres in South Kingstown, and a manuscript law treatise.

Provenance:


            These papers were all apparently a gift of Caroline Hazard in 1945, except for the law treatise, which was donated by Oliver C. Hazard in 2001.

Item 1. Deed from father Thomas Hazard for 150-acre lot, July 28, 1721.

Item 2. Deed from brother Jeremiah Hazard for 25-acre lot, April 30, 1733.

Item 3. Deed from father Thomas Hazard for 160 acres on Point Judith Neck, October 24, 1733.

Item 4. Deed from Peter Easton for 1/4 acre in Newport adjacent to Quaker meeting house, June 22, 1734.

Item 5. Deed from father Thomas Hazard for 200-acre lot, being one quarter of the 800 acres received from Francis Brinley, September 14, 1739.

Item 6. Deed from father Thomas Hazard for two lots in South Kingstown, 300 and 125 acres, April 17, 1740.

Item 7. Deed from father Thomas Hazard for 120-acre lot and two small lots in South Kingstown, January 26, 1742/3. Torn with small portion missing.

Item 8. Last will and testament, December 2, 1745. Signature torn out.

Item 9. Memorandum of accounts with Francis Brinley, May 16 1741 to June 29 1745.

Item 10. Memorandum re death of father, reading in full: "November the twenty first day my honred fathe Thomas Haszard dparted this life aged 88 or 89 years in the year 1746."

Item 11. Receipt from Susquehanna Company for two Spanish dollars, November 21, 1754.

Item 12. Receipt from Meriam Hazard for legacy of 100 pounds paid as executor of estate of father Thomas Hazard, January 12, 1757.

Item 13. Manuscript law treatise, circa 1709-1745. 167 pages. Apparently a transcription of Sir Edward Coke's 1628 The First Part of the Institutes of the Laws of England (commonly known as "Coke on Littleton"). Probably belonged to Robert Hazard before 1745.
