Narragansett Choral Society Records Singing group, South Kingstown, R.I. Records, 1889-1918 Size: 0.5 linear feet Catalog number: MSS 483 sg 30 Processed by: Steve Dalpe and Rick Stattler, March 1996 ©Rhode Island Historical Society Manuscripts Division |
Historical note:
The Narragansett Choral Society was founded in 1889. Caroline Hazard (1856-1945) served as the first secretary of the society, and seems to have been the guiding force behind it. The society drew sixty-eight members for its first rehearsal at the Peace Dale Congregational Church. Eventually, a conductor was hired. John Robinson Carpenter (1874-1950), a long-time Hazard family associate, also served as secretary and librarian, and occasionally conducted the chorus.
Scope and content:
The bulk of this collection consists of correspondence files of John Carpenter, including some reports and programs. It also includes the first minute book of the society's board of directors, and a script for the connective dialogue to "Sherwood's Queen", apparently performed by the Society. A large box of the society's programs was transferred to the Printed Collection.
Provenance:
These papers were donated by the Hazard family as part of the Hazard Family Papers in 1985. They had been deposited in 1983.
Processing note:
This collection is part of the Hazard Family Papers, which were processed with support from the Rhode Island Committee for the Humanities, the Beinecke Foundation, and the extended Hazard Family.
