Historical note:

The Narragansett Pier Navigation Company was formed by members of the Hazard family in 1880 to run passenger steamships between Newport and Narragansett, R.I. The original stockholders were Rowland Hazard II (1829-1898), John Newbold Hazard and Rowland Gibson Hazard II (1855-1918). The intent was to complement the family's Narragansett Pier Railroad service from Kingston to Narragansett. The steamship Herman S. Caswell served on this short route every summer from 1879 to 1896, and was replaced by the larger Manisees in 1897. The Manisees was sold to the United States government in 1900, and the company distributed its final dividends in 1901.
