South County Co-operative Association Records Camp, West Kingston, R.I. Records, 1917-1919 Size: 0.25 linear feet Catalog number: MSS 483 sg 47 Processed by: Rick Stattler, December 1997 ©Rhode Island Historical Society Manuscripts Division |
Historical note:
The South County Co-operative Association operated from 1917 to 1918 in West Kingston, R.I. The nature of the business is obscured by the scantness of its surviving records, but it seems to have derived income largely through the operation of a camp, and through the sale of berries grown on its property. The extent of the Hazard family's involvement is unclear, although much of the initial investment came from a fund at the Peace Dale Manufacturing Company titled the "R. Hazard Special Account". An undated "Inventory of Camp May put in Mr. Hazard's Barn", presumably dating from the association's dissolution, shows farm equipment, 20 army cots, kitchen supplies, a Ford truck and other goods.
