Historical note:
Willard S. Winslow, Jr. was a geologist in Rhode Island who had an extensive private mineral collection. He also was known among the geological institutions nationally and abroad. Mr. Winslow claimed credit for discovering the "famous" amphibole deposit on Fruit Hill, North Providence in 1939, and for "the largest and perhaps the finest private collection of Rhode Island minerals in existence." He was employed in 1945 by the United States Department of the Interior with the United states Geological survey, and compiled A Catalog of Minerals and Mineral Localities of Rhode Island that same year. Winslow lived for most of his life on Olney Avenue in North Providence, R.I., but after 1977 lived in Warwick and Providence.
Scope and content:
This collection consists mainly of correspondence from fellow geologists across the country, and bulletins from several geological institutions. Winslow apparently wrote frequently to his elected representatives; the collection includes at least eight responses from U.S. Sen. Claiborne deB. Pell from 1964 to 1981, and letters from Rep. John E. Fogarty in 1958, Sen. John O. Pastore in 1969, and Sen. John H. Chaffee in 1977.
Provenance:
This collection was donated by Willard S. Winslow Jr. in 1982.
Processing note:
An undated map of a gold mine near Ponagansett Pond in Glocester, R.I. was transferred to the Graphics Division.
