Herbert Larned Dorrance Papers Providence stockbroker Diaries, 1896-1932 Size: 0.5 linear feet Catalog number: MSS 869 Processed by: Rick Stattler, December 1994 ©Rhode Island Historical Society Manuscripts Division |
Historical note:
Herbert Larned Dorrance (1883-ca. 1952) was born in Providence, Rhode Island, the son of Charles T. Dorrance and Susan G. (Larned) Dorrance. He graduated from Brown University in 1907, and had his own investment securities firm in Providence, called Dorrance & Company. He moved to Boston around 1932, where he lived for the remainder of his life.
Scope and content:
This collection consists mostly of small pocket diaries kept by Dorrance, one for each year from 1896 to 1932. Many days are left blank, and the entries are generally very brief. In addition, there are a few miscellaneous items, including draft registration materials, a letter written to Dorrance as an infant by a great aunt, and a pocket address book titled "London, August, 1909."
Provenance:
The collection was donated by Ann Baker in December of 1994, on behalf of her husband Norman D. Baker Jr., a grandson of Dorrance.
Processing note:
All loose papers were removed from the diaries, and notes made on their origin. Photographs from this collection are in the Graphics Division, while a 1903 Hope High School yearbook and a 1907 Brown commencement program were sent to the printed collection.
