Historical note:
Albert N. Brown (1843-1920) was a merchant as well as a playwright. He was in business with Judson B. Slocum in Westerly, R.I., and together they sold groceries, fruit, and seafood. He moved to Providence with his wife Elizabeth M. (1848-1908) in 1894 where he became a clerk for the Providence Gas Company.
Scope and content:
This collection contains many account books and bills from Brown's time as a merchant. It also contains letters from various people (mostly from his uncle Frank Brown of New York City), and plays written by Brown.
Provenance:
This collection was donated on June 4, 1981 by Mrs. Muriel Bourne.
Processing note:
Papers were sorted through and put into acid-free folders which are listed alphabetically. The folders were then placed into an acid-free box.
