Historical note:
The Benefit Street Association was founded in December of 1962 as a neighborhood organization. It served the north end of Benefit Street on the east side of Providence, as well as a one-block radius on either side. The issues it has addressed include crime, parking, traffic, and historic preservation. They played a role in the creation of Roger Williams National Park. The early leaders of this organization, including Antoinette Downing and Joseph K. Ott, have also played a major role in the area's other preservation groups, including the Providence Preservation Society and the Hill Realty Company. The name of the organization was changed to the North Benefit Street Association in 1977.
Scope and content:
This collection contains mostly minutes and correspondence of the organization from 1962 through 1979, as well as scattered later records through 1986. There are no treasurer's records. There are also several files with uncertain connection to the Association.
