Merchant tailor of Providence. Papers, 1839-1901. Size: .25 linear feet Catalog number: MSS 971 Processed by: Rick Stattler, January 1996 ©Rhode Island Historical Society Manuscripts Division |
Historical note:
John Flavel Jolls (1811-1897) was a merchant tailor, and lived all his life in Providence. He married Julia Ann Braley (1811- ) around 1837. They had one surviving child, Jennie H. Jolls (1838- ). John was active as a tailor from at least 1838 through 1858. He entered a partnership with Abner Gay, Jr. in 1839, which ended the following year. Until about 1843, he was a partner in Padelford & Jolls. Later in life, Jolls embarked on several unrelated ventures; he developed a new variety of raspberry in 1872.
Scope and content:
Includes several documents relating to Julia's mother Hannah Braley, who inherited her husband's position as keeper of a light house near New Bedford. John Jolls was executor of her estate. There are several letters dealing with the Braleys' Ohio lands, including a letter from the Brown family agent, Douglas Putnam of Marietta, Ohio. Other interesting items are a five-page report on a phrenelogical examination of Hannah Jolls, and a chart of pew owners for an unidentified church. There are also many receipts, mostly for household expenses.
Provenance:
The provenance of this collection is unknown; from the appearance of its catalog card, it probably arrived during the 1950s.
