Historical note:

Edward Stanhope Jr. (1811-1893) was the son of Edward and Susanna Stanhope. By 1834, he was operating a grocery store in Newport, Rhode Island. He married Ann Eliza Wickes (1818-1887). In 1852, he moved his operations to East Greenwich, Rhode Island; his store was on the corner of Main and Armory Streets. He continued to run the store after being chosen as town clerk in 1868.

Provenance:

This collection was a gift from the Connecticut River Museum in 1993; they had received it as a gift from Kurt Peterson. Six other account books from an unrelated East Greenwich tailor were removed from this gift to form the Stukely B. Wickes Records.
