Historical note:

            The Pawtucket Day Nursery was founded in 1892, the first licensed nursery in the state of Rhode Island. It has a long history of providing day care for poor working mothers.

Provenance:

            The bulk of these records were donated by the Pawtucket Day Nursery in 1996. One additional early volume was donated in 1998, and three more were donated in 1999.

Processing note:

            In 1995, the Nursery's archives were carefully inventoried by Joe Saldibar, a Roger Williams College intern, but left in their original boxes without organization. When the records were donated to the RIHSL in December of 1996, about half of the records were not accepted, and were left in the custody of the PDN. The half that were accepted were reorganized into seven series, but still need a more detailed organization. Three boxes of loose papers are still completely uninventoried.
