Mark Toney, a Vallejo, California native, came in 1978 to study at Brown University and became active in the peace movement and local civil rights campaigns. In 1982, as lead organizer for WAGE, Toney began his work lobbying on issues affecting lower-income Rhode Islanders [1]. MSS 966, Box 1, Folder: WAGE – Posters
During the three years that the organization was active, there were over 1,500 members from all over the state that participated in campaigns to guarantee employment to poor Rhode Island residents, ensure that utilities were not shut off due to lack of payment and clothe and feed poor children.
