Sherenté Harris, an Indigenous Two Spirit Dancer, overcame discrimination through traditional dance. His mother is a noted Fancy Shawl dancer, while his father practiced the Eastern War style. Early in his life, Sherenté followed in his father’s footsteps by competing in Eastern War dance competitions. After he came out as Two Spirit, the modern pan-Indian term that is used to describe non-binary gender and sexuality in Native American communities, Sherenté faced discrimination while trying to compete in Fancy Shawl competitions. Hear how they overcame this experience to go on and win first place, as well as become a youth leader and activist in both the LGBTQ+ and Narragansett communities. The program will also feature Sherenté performing a Fancy Shawl dance.
